It's not going away anytime soon, just not the default anymore.

We should strive to have easy to use tools rather than easy to use wrappers.
This benefits everyone instead of just benefiting Gentoo, which is my vision.
BSD is far superior here, and I did start at making a new ifconfig for Linux 
that brought a similar level of functionality. However, that project has 
stalled due to a lack of time. I can make the sources available if anyone 
wants to pick it up.
