OK
I'm seeing other DHCP messages in the tcpdump trace, so I reckon that
the server is seeing my messages.
If it's seeing them, then it should be sending replies back. Can you see
these via tcpdump? Can you email me a full tcpdump for analysis in
wireshark? Can you run dhcpcd with debugging enabled (add the word debug
on its own line in /etc/dhcpcd.conf) and see if dhcpcd is rejecting it
for any reason?
Looks like I have found the problem and it seems to be hardware related.
I was using a POE (power-over-ethernet) connector to supply power to the
ALIX board. Connecting the cable directly from the modem into the red
connector and bingo the dhcpcd daemon comes alive and provides an IP
address.
In case someone want to know what POE is, it provides power to the
device through the Ethernet cable instead of connecting power directly
into the case. My guess is that some how the power was disrupting the
Ethernet packets.

Duncan
