I'm seeing other DHCP messages in the tcpdump trace, so I reckon that
the server is seeing my messages.

If it's seeing them, then it should be sending replies back. Can you see these via tcpdump? Can you email me a full tcpdump for analysis in wireshark? Can you run dhcpcd with debugging enabled (add the word debug on its own line in /etc/dhcpcd.conf) and see if dhcpcd is rejecting it for any reason?
